Aswan is the quietest town on the Egyptian Nile – a frontier town where the river breaks into channels around granite islands and the desert finally wins. For thousands of years this was the edge of Egypt and the doorway to Nubia and Africa beyond, and you can still feel the change: the food is spicier, the houses are painted bright, and the pace drops a gear.
The headline sights are on the water. Philae temple, rescued stone by stone from the rising lake and rebuilt on its own island, is best reached by motorboat at the end of the day. Feluccas – the lateen-sailed boats that have worked this river forever – drift between Elephantine Island and the Old Cataract Hotel where Agatha Christie wrote.
Aswan is also the launch point for Abu Simbel, Ramses II's colossal temple cut into a mountain three hours south. Most cruises end here; two nights is enough to see the town properly and still fit Abu Simbel in.

01A temple to Isis on its own island, moved block by block to higher ground when the dams raised the water. Arrive by motorboat in the late afternoon, when the stone turns honey-gold and the crowds have thinned to almost nobody.

This 8-day Egypt tour combines Cairo’s ancient monuments with a Nile cruise between Luxor and Aswan. You board MS Miriam at the Luxor Corniche pier mid-afternoon and settle into a compact river cabin before the first walk to Karnak. I meet you on the quay: I am the Egyptologist who guides this route and I take you straight to the temple avenues where the sound of sandals on sandstone and the smell of date-syrup stalls still set the rhythm of the day. We start early on the West Bank at the Valley of the Kings – low light, few people, and panels that explain the painted ceilings up close. Back on board you watch the Nile change color as the vessel slips through the Esna lock; we moor overnight near Edfu so the temple visit gets two hours rather than a rushed stop. Day three gives you Kom Ombo’s double shrines and the Nile at dusk; on arrival in Aswan I show you Philae’s hypostyle hall and the High Dam’s concrete scale against the river. Best time to visit
Aswan is the warmest of the Nile towns – kind in winter, fierce in summer.
Mild, dry and bright (24–32°C) – the season Aswan was made for. Evenings on the water are cool and clear. Book around Christmas and February.
Routinely above 40°C. The town all but closes at midday; mornings and evenings are still pleasant on the river, and prices drop hard.
Twice a year (around Feb 22 and Oct 22) the rising sun reaches the inner sanctuary of Abu Simbel – a packed but remarkable morning.
Sunset sails are best October to April when the breeze is steady and the light is long. Summer evenings work too, once the day's heat lifts.

Aswan airport (ASW) is about 25 minutes from town, with daily flights from Cairo and Luxor and the Abu Simbel hop. Many arrive by cruise instead.
